How to Start Racing with Morgan Challenge
Whether you’re new to motorsport or a seasoned enthusiast, here’s how you can begin your journey into the paddock with Morgan Challenge:
- Obtain a Motorsport UK Go Racing Starter Pack (£115)
Start with the Motorsport UK Go Racing Pack, which includes:
- A detailed application form.
- A medical form (required if you’re 60 or older).
- Information on what to expect during the ARDS course.
- Your first race licence fee.
You can purchase the pack directly from the Motorsport UK website.
- Complete the ARDS Test (£270-£320)
Book and attend the ARDS (Association of Racing Drivers Schools) Test at a circuit near you. The test consists of:
- A written test on motorsport regulations and flags.
- A practical driving test to assess your racecraft.
Additional Notes:
- An eye test is required if you’re aged 14–59.
- A basic medical exam is mandatory if you’re 60 or older.
- Apply for a Motorsport UK Race Licence (included in step 1)
Once you’ve passed the ARDS test, apply for your Motorsport UK Race Licence.
- This licence must be renewed annually.
- Familiarise yourself with the National Competition Rules (NCR) to ensure compliance during races.
- Prepare a car
Source or prepare your own car that fits your budget and experience level. Options may include:
- Race-Prepared Cars: Already modified and ready for competition.
- Road Car Conversion: Convert a standard road-going Morgan to meet safety and performance requirements, including:

- Roll cage,
- Race seat,
- Harness,
- Fire extinguisher,
- Electrical cutoff switch,
- Rain light,
- Championship regulated tyres.
- Purchase Personal Safety Equipment
Invest in high-quality safety gear, which is mandatory for all competitors:
- Approved helmet.
- Race suit and fireproof underwear.
- Gloves and boots.
- Frontal Head Restraint (HANS device) (mandatory for cars newer than 1977).
- Join the Classic Sports Car Club
Become a member of the Classic Sports Car Club (CSCC), hosting club of Morgan Challenge.
- Annual membership fee: £49 (valid for 12 months).
- Register Your Car for the Championship
Sign up for the Morgan Challenge Championship:
- Championship Registration Fee: £150 per car.
- Alternatively join Invitation Class 0 with no registration fee if your car is not eligible for a Class.
- Arrange a Rolling Road Test
To determine your car’s class, attend a rolling road operator at a nominated MAHA dyno.
- Weight can be taken at your first event to allocate Class if not done beforehand.
- Purchase or Hire a Transponder
A transponder is required for timing purposes:
- Both battery-powered and hard-wired versions are acceptable.
- Transponders can be hired from the organisers for individual events.
- Enter Your First Race
Once all the above steps are complete:
- Register for races via CSCC’s online booking system or by form if necessary.
- Submit your entry and get ready to hit the track!
By following these steps, you’ll be ready to join the Morgan Challenge and experience one of the UK’s most iconic Championships.
