Challenge Chronicles: A Winner’s Perspective
Cadwell Park once again delivered a spectacular weekend of racing in the Morgan Challenge Championship. Nestled deep in the Lincolnshire Wolds, the tight, twisting ribbon of tarmac is renowned for testing driver skill, car balance, and sheer bravery — Rounds 3 & 4 proved no exception bringing a staggering 24 cars with both new and familiar faces joining the grid for the first time in 2025.
With its steep elevation changes, blind crests, Cadwell demands total commitment. From the moment the lights went out, it was clear that the field was ready to deliver. Fierce battles unfolded throughout the grid — from the front-running V8s taking off at The Mountain, to the featherweight 4/4s threading the needle through Hall Bends section.
The crowd was treated to a race full of drama, technical precision, and classic Morgan wheel-to-wheel action, with each class providing its own storylines, triumphs, and tactical battles. Below, we hear from each of the class winners, offering a driver’s-eye view of how they conquered the challenge of Cadwell Park:
Russell Paterson – Class 1 – Plus 8
Fired up after our (dad and lad shared drive) Future Classics win on Saturday, I felt it was time to offer Keith the opportunity to study the very beautiful rear end of 43 MOG!!
So, to set the tone, I decided pole was for me but finding a clear lap in qualifying proved a challenge! I hung back a bit with a few minutes left before the chequered flag and popped in the lap needed to achieve this goal!
Fortunately, I managed a decent start to the race, not always easy in a Class 1 car, and grabbed the lead by the first corner…. so far so good!
Young Louis proved a bit of a pest and was all over me for a couple of laps whilst my tyres warmed up. This I hadn’t anticipated but had a great tussle with him until Keith distracted him in his quest to pop me in my place!
No way was that going to happen……..let battle commence!!
We then thundered around holding our positions without too much drama, the odd back marker adding to the excitement by closing this up a little too much at times, but that’s part of the fun of the Morgan Challenge!
Unfortunately, the race ended a little early spoiling the fun somewhat, but it was very satisfying to cross the line ahead of the pack.
So, my thanks to both Keith and Louis for being skilled and worthy opponents, to our resident car prep wizard, Paul Bracey and to Chris Thompson for pulling together the best Cadwell event I can remember.
Keith Ahlers – Class 1 – Plus 8
Cadwell Park. A great circuit. Known as the mini Nurburgring. My first visit since 2015. As the Class A fastest lap holder I was looking forward to qualifying. I was disappointed to be second on the grid some three seconds off my lap record. Russel Patterson on pole. At the start of the first race I got far too much wheelspin and lost six places. I fought back to second behind Russell. In the second race I led from start to finish. My 109 th Morgan Challenge victory. Normal service resumed!
Louis Ruff – Class 2 – Plus 4 CX
My first outing at Cadwell Park, and it certainly lived up to its reputation. The grid was packed with Morgans, which added both excitement and a few tight squeezes given the circuit’s already narrow layout.
In qualifying, I wasn’t able to put together a clean lap due to traffic, which placed me P4 on the grid—Andrew lining up to my right, with the Class 1 frontrunners ahead. At the start, Keith bogged down off the line, forcing me to hug the pit wall to avoid contact and thread the car through a rapidly closing gap. I latched onto the back of Russell and maintained pressure, but with limited overtaking opportunities and coming straight off a 30-minute open race, I opted to manage the gap and bring the car home P3 overall, securing a comfortable Class win.
Race 2 provided another opportunity to challenge the Class 1 field. However, a sluggish start from Russell left me boxed in, allowing Andrew to out-drag me into Coppice. I regained track position with a decisive late-brake move into Park, reclaiming 3rd place. Despite pushing hard, I couldn’t find a clean way past either Russell or Keith, so I focused on maintaining pace and position. Another solid P3 overall and another Class win giving me key points to keep my championship campaign on track.
Philip St Clair Tisdall – Class 4 – Plus 8
In the first race I was on a row with Simon Sherry and Tony Kilby behind me. I had a poor start and was passed by Simon Sherry. It took until second lap to get past Simon. After that I was on my own until the safety car came out and the race was stopped.
In the second race I had Tony Kilby and Simon Sherry behind me. I had a better start but was passed by Tony Kilby. We had a fantastic race nose to tail where Tony finished just .449 sec in front.
Tom Richards – Class 5 – Plus 4 Clubsport
Qualifying – The first laps of qualifying were spent learning how not to lock-up into Mansfield. I had forgotten just how steep the entry to that corner was. Once that had been resolved it was a surprise to how high up the field I was placed.
Race 1 – After a great start, it wasn’t long before the faster cars behind had caught up and overtaken. I spent the remainder being dragged around the circuit by the cars ahead, the Clubsport having the edge over the mountain.
Race 2 – With a good start again, I managed to find myself ahead of an ARV6 (I must mention that it was Ian’s first time in the car). Once Ian had got to grips with it, he motored past and from that point onwards it was a case of remaining consistent.
Over both races I had the best seat in the venue to watch the great racing ahead between Garland, Whitt family, John Milbank and the Lees family.
William Plant – Class H – Plus 8
A huge thank you to Chris Thompson for putting on such a great days racing. It was a pleasure to be back out after so long with the Morgan Challenge in the newly created Class H that was strongly supported. My self and Elliot Patterson had a fantastic battle in both Race 1 and Race 2 with both of us taking a class win, with myself in Race 1 and Elliot in Race 2. I would have to say it was one of the best battles I have had on track for along time with clean racing, and I’m thoroughly looking forward to being back out on track soon.
Elliot Paterson – Class H – Plus 8
- How well organised the weekend was, thank you to Chris Thompson for his hard work.
- The grid size at Cadwell! Excellent turn out for the Challenge at a track that doesn’t always see huge grids. – Two outstanding races with Will Plant. The two of us had grown up in the Morgan paddock together and never really had the chance of a head to head battle. I thoroughly enjoyed them both, one win each seemed fair and thoroughly looking forward to our next time on track together.

The return of the Cadwell Curry Competition, a Challenge tradition last held in 2021. The food was devoured quicker than a lap of the track (well at walking pace as those needing to learn their lines did so late in to the evening). Best dish was awarded to Kay Kilby taking home the Cadwell Curry Cup, with tied runners up Julia and Andy both receiving a bottle of Champagne.
2025 Winner – Kay Kilby
