Challenge Chronicles: Close but no Cigar

Rounds 5 and 6 of the Morgan Challenge Championship roared into life at Snetterton on the 5th of July, where competitors were greeted by overcast but mercifully dry skies. Despite the ominous clouds overhead, spirits remained high across the paddock, as every class saw continued dedication and fierce competition from a full roster of drivers. The Norfolk circuit bore witness to thrilling wheel-to-wheel battles and impressive displays of fair and competitive racing.
Now, it’s time to hear from those who pushed to the limit but fell just shy of the top step – the determined racers finishing second in class ……. “close but no cigar”
Andrew Long – Class H – Plus 8
Only my third race in the Morgan Challenge, after being introduced to the Morgan racing scene by Richard Thorne. Snetterton again delivered a thoroughly enjoyable day’s racing, with great weather, a fantastic turnout, and plenty of exciting individual battles across all classes. The atmosphere in the paddock was as welcoming as ever, and the racing clean and competitive throughout. The day was brilliantly organised, and a special thanks must go to Chris Thompson and the CSCC for making it all run so smoothly. I can’t wait to race and see you all at Silverstone, the big one!
Simon Sherry – Class 4 – Plus 8
The paddock was its usual friendly supportive place and qualifying went unremarkably for everyone, except for Tony Kilby who had a problem with his throttle. Well done Team Thorne who fixed the problem but not in time for the first race.
Race 1. There was one non starter, sadly Michelle and Chris Bailey’s car (class 0 +4) had developed a slipping clutch. All the races were to be rolling starts which everyone has their opinion on but as the red lights went out we all managed to get round the first 2 bends safely. From my perspective the race developed into a four car battle for class 4 honours, Philip Tidsall(+8), Howard Clark(roadster), Simon Sherry(+8) and Nigel Stuckey(roadster) were all close on the road. The lead swapped several times but an unfortunate spin by Philip on the final lap resulted in Howard crossing the line one second ahead of Simon and Philip being lapped by the race leaders. We found out that Nigel’s car had retired on lap 8 due to a broken alternator belt and his exhaust manifold being loose.
Race 2. Peter Sargeant and Kelvin Laidlaw had family commitments so had not entered race 2, the Bailey car had withdrawn but Nigel’s car had been fixed with the support of Team Techniques. From my seat the second race was remarkably similar to the first with lots of close jostling interrupted by an impressively rapid Tom Richards (class+4 club sport) who soon got past all the class 4 cars and disappeared ahead. Philip again had a spin on the penultimate lap and Howard again led Simon over the line by just under a second.
For me the races were very close, very exciting and very exhausting!
Will Pratt – Class 1 – Plus 4
Great to be back at Snetterton for another weekend of quality racing, especially sharing the track with my dad and brother!Bittersweet to qualify 2nd – just 0.236s behind my brother (Oli) who I was determined to beat, but overall very happy with the position and the lap I put in.
In Race 1, I lost a place off the line to Louis Ruff, who put it down the inside on the first corner, but I soon managed to fight back and finish 2nd, unable to close the gap to Oli out front.
Race 2 played out similarly – another poor start, but this time I couldn’t reclaim the position. Despite a late charge, I crossed the line just 0.235s behind Louis. Frustrating, but credit to him for a great drive!
Looking forward to Silverstone next!
John Richards – Class 5 – Plus 4 Clubsport
Qualifying.
After the first lap scrubbing in tyres and bedding in brakes I set off to catch up with Kathy, when I did Kathy was behind Sarge with the widest car on the track. Kathy dropped back and I managed to pass Sarge at Brundle.
Race 1
Wrong gear on the rolling start sent me backwards, The first couple of laps were spent battling with Sarge and trying to keep Kathy behind me I managed to gain back my grid position again out braking Sarge through Brundle. Kelvin wasn’t fair ahead and spent the rest of the race trying to keep up and staying out of the way of the faster cars.
Race 2
It was a race with Kathy, not the best of starts but not as bad as race 1 but It took 5 laps to eventually catch and pass Kathy and in the process set my fastest Snetterton lap. Some close racing towards the back of the grid.
